Karim Jivraj is seeking the Conservative Party of Canada nomination in Calgary-Centre, the home riding of the Calgary Petroleum Club. Calgary-Centre is currently held by Liberal MP Kent Hehr, and is considered as one of the ridings to watch in the 2019 federal election.
Karim has been a card-carrying Conservative Party of Canada member for over 15 years and has been involved in dozens of political campaigns, including senior roles on several leadership campaigns. He was tapped by the Conservative Party to run in the 2015 election against Liberal Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Described as a “young conservative rising star,” Karim was asked by Prime Minister Harper to represent the Conservative Party at locally and nationally broadcast debates. His spirited parliamentary run was profiled in the National Post, the Globe & Mail, The Walrus, and CTV News. Here in Calgary, Karim played an instrumental role in the Unite the Right effort that led to the merger of Alberta PC and Wildrose Parties.
Karim holds two law degrees (LL.B. in International Law, LL.M. in Constitutional Law) from the University of Paris (Sorbonne). He also pursued graduate studies in international law and political economy at Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) and Cornell Law School.
Karim’s focus has been on international commercial arbitration and Investor-State disputes. He has worked on disputes under the auspices of various treaties (bilateral investment treaties. NAFTA Chapter 11, Energy Charter Treaty) and under the rules of various panels (ICSID, London Court of International Arbitration, International Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre), and on matters spanning numerous sectors, including construction, oil & gas, banking, and mining. Prior to seeking the nomination, Karim most recently worked at Western Canada’s leading insurance firm based in Calgary.
A lifelong community volunteer and leading conservative organizer in Calgary, Karim serves as a high school debate judge with the Alberta Speech and Debate Association, and currently serves as the President of the UCP Calgary Mountain View Association, and as an elected Director on the CPC Calgary Confederation EDA, CPC Calgary Centre EDA, and UCP Calgary Elbow CA Boards.
